First Trip to the Dentist.

I took Deuce to the dentist for the first time a few weeks ago. I've never had a dentist in Greensboro. I've had the same dentist since I moved to Chapel Hill in 1988. The only place I've ever gone is to Dr. Seaton. I have such an extensive dental history that I needed to go by Dr. Seaton's and pick up my dental records to take with me to my new dentist. I was a little sentimental when I was in there and they showed me pictures of me and Laura when we were 6 & 4.

I looked up the dentists in Greensboro that were covered by our dental insurance and selected Dr. Millsaps for a variety of reasons:
1. He's young. {As in about 3 years younger than me!} I like the idea of having a medical provider close to my age that I feel like I can relate to and is not going to talk to me like their child when they tell me how important it is to floss everyday {which I do actually - ask Ed!}.
2. It's a brand new office. Obviously since said doctor is about 27 years old, he has a new office with top of the line, brand new equipment. Seriously, who opens their own dental practice in their mid-twenties??
3. They are super busy. I don't know if it's because he has a slack schedule and likes to play golf more than work, but they are booking out appointments several months in advance. I took this as a sign that people really like this guy.
4. The most important reason of all!!
He is a UNC grad - both undergrad and dental school and he likes sports.
My mom spent so much money on my mouth at the UNC dental school while I was in college that I basically knew everyone that worked there from the receptionists, the students, the entodontists and the surgeons. Yes, my teeth just suck that bad.

Seriously, that's how I pick my doctors.
I selected my OB to take care of me through my pregnancy because she went to undergrad at State (like me) and went to Med School at UNC so she liked both schools.
And she was awesome.
Anyway, I made the earliest appointment possible because we were going to the mountains that day. My mom came up to help me with Deuce so that after his check up was over, mom could take him out so I could get my teeth cleaned. It's amazing how quickly their little minds start putting pieces together. He's never minded going to the doctor prior to that CT scan, but as soon as we walked in to the dentist, he flipped. It was like the lobby area reminded him of that awful day. He wanted to be held the entire time. Lucky for us, the other patients scheduled at the same time as us had cancelled so we had the whole office to ourselves. Me, mom, Deuce, the doctor & the hygienist. It was great!
Dr. Millsaps decided to look at Deuce first and he was so good with him! He talked to Deuce, showed him pictures of his dogs, asked him about his beloved Curious George shirt and I was able to lay Deuce down on my stomach. He never loosened his grip on my wrists though. He let Dr. Millsaps examine him, scrape his teeth and floss him. Dr. Millsaps said Deuce has great spacing in between his teeth right now and they look good. He finished by letting Deuce pick out a new toothbrush, some flossies and a toy {of course he picked the ball}. Deuce did so good. I couldn't believe it. He doesn't need to go back until he's 3 for his first full cleaning and polishing. And ever since we went, Deuce brushes his teeth about 10 times a day.
After Deuce was done, it was my turn. Deuce was not happy about having to get down and leave me in there alone. Like he threw a fit. But you know what, Dr. Millsaps went out into the lobby with mom & Deuce & totally distracted him by playing with him the entire time I was getting my teeth cleaned by the hygienist. I'm talking he blew up gloves to be balloons that they were hitting all over the office, he showed Deuce how to juggle, they talked football and before I knew it, I was done and Deuce was in the lobby happy as could be. What kind of dentist does that?
A really good one.
One who's dad is a pediatrician.
A young one who has the energy and patience to deal with kids.
And one who graduated from UNC.
The appointment was exactly what I had hoped for: a positive experience that won't leave him freaked out for the next time he goes.

The news was not all good for me {I told you my teeth suck} but it's nothing compared to what I've been through in the past. Ed goes next week to meet Dr. Millsaps for the first time and I'm sure he's going to love him!

Nana's Knee Surgery

So my mom has had two knee surgeries this summer. She had a partial knee replacement on her left leg in the middle of May. She went to physical therapy with Val (Harrison's mommy) and diligently did her exercises at home. Because it was her left leg, she was able to drive not too long after her surgery. She was well enough to go back to school half-days for the last few days of the school year, roughly 4 weeks after her surgery. Last Tuesday she had a partial knee replacement on her right knee. She was very strategic and worked so hard to rehab her left leg so that she could have the right one done as soon as possible. If she has the same success with her right leg as she did her left, she should be okay to head back to school just in time for the new school year to start. Both times she had her surgery at the North Carolina Specialty Hospital in Durham. She had the surgery on Tuesdays and went home on Fridays. My sister spent the night with her on Tuesday and stayed with her all day on Wednesday. I went there after work on Wednesday and spent the night with her and stayed through Thursday. I didn't take Deuce to see her after the first surgery but I took him to see her on Tuesday after the second surgery.
He was a little scared at first. He gave her a kiss if he was being held and we tried to get him to lay in the bed with her but he wasn't having it. We showed him her big knee brace and told him Nana had a boo boo. He looked sad and then showed Nana his boo boo, which is a barely there anymore scrape from a few weeks back.

After a few minutes he loosened up and became his normal self. My sister had brought us dinner so we set up and ate in the room. Deuce found the box of gloves on the wall and they were at the perfect height for him to reach them. I found him getting frustrated trying to put them on. He finally said "help!"
So he put his Dr. gloves on and he crawled up on Nana's bed and pretended to check her out. It was adorable. We only stayed for about an hour because mom was really tired and it's pretty difficult to contain a 2 year old in a hospital room. He much preferred running walking up and down the halls waving to all of the nurses.
Mom is doing well with her recovery and is back to PT with Val today.

Picture Message Downloads

Every time someone sends me a picture message, I attempt to save the picture to my SD card so that I can have it with me if I get a new phone. Here is a collection of pictures that have been sent to me from my family & friends.

Burlington City Park

TJ is heavy into his AAU basketball season and it seems like he has a tournament every single weekend. Most of the time they just pop up the week before so without notice Ed is gone on the weekends. This leaves a lot of time for me and Deuce to do whatever we feel like doing since we are by ourselves. I have taken him to a few of TJ's games this season but it is so hard with him right now. He loves to play ball so he only wants to go on the court or sit on the bench with the boys during the game. I am constantly chasing him around and don't get to watch much of the game anyway. Plus, if the game is not close by, TJ could have 3-4 games in 1 day and that is just too long for Deuce {and me} to be at the gym sitting still. Ed has taken him to a few tournaments with him if I've had plans already and I know it's been hard for him too.

With that being said, a couple of weekends ago Deuce and I were alone one Sunday so we met my mom and sister at Burlington City Park. I had heard about the park for years but had never been and since it's sort of in between my house and mom's, we decided it would be a good time to try it. It was perfect for Deuce. Ride tickets were only .75 cents a piece and the rides only cost 1 ticket each. We bought 10 tickets for $6 and that was plenty.

We rode the train.
He rode the carousel at least 4 times, getting on different animals each time. He made us all ride it with him at least once.
He drove the blue car around the track.
Then he wanted to do it again and be the leader in the fire truck.
He also rode in the airplanes. He loved flying.
And before we left, we ran into Will & Candice!
If you haven't been to the Burlington City Park and you have little kids, I suggest you take them there! The rides are pretty small so I'm not sure that kids over 5 would really like it all that much but it was a great afternoon of fun for a great price!

Exploring Greensboro.

Now that it's summer and I have Thursdays and Fridays off, Deuce and I are having a great time exploring parts of Greensboro that we've never had the chance to enjoy. A couple weeks back we decided to walk through downtown. We started by making a trip to the big public library. Deuce is like his Nana and loves books. I think he was a little overwhelmed when we walked into the children's section at all of the bright colors, the tree house for reading, the little tables, and the rows and rows of books that were all within his reach.
Then we walked to the City Center. He loved all of the fountains and the grassy area for running.
After we had been there awhile, Deuce took it upon himself to join some other kids in a game of soccer. Soccer with a basketball, that is.
He had a blast.
This kid loves being outside.
Other things I want to do in Greensboro:
1. Museum of Natural Science
2. Shop for antiques
3. Boutique hop through downtown
4. Civil Rights Museum

What else should we do?
